Copperfield House

What was once a garage located in the front garden of our client’s property has been carefully transformed into a beautiful two-bedroom oak-framed home, designed as a comfortable and practical place for them to retire. The challenge was to repurpose an underused structure into a residence that felt warm, characterful, and entirely in keeping with its surroundings.

Project Overview
What was once a garage located in the front garden of our client’s property has been carefully transformed into a beautiful two-bedroom oak-framed home, designed as a comfortable and practical place for them to retire. The challenge was to repurpose an underused structure into a residence that felt warm, characterful, and entirely in keeping with its surroundings.

Design Approach
The design embraces the timeless appeal of traditional oak framing while introducing large glazed gables to flood the interiors with natural light and create a strong connection to the garden. The pitched roof and natural materials respect the character of the existing property and village context, while the new home offers a contemporary level of comfort and efficiency.

Spatial Layout
Inside, the home provides two well-proportioned bedrooms, a generous open-plan living space, and thoughtfully arranged amenities tailored to the client’s needs in retirement. The vaulted oak frame creates a sense of openness and warmth, with carefully positioned windows capturing views of the surrounding greenery.

Sustainability & Materials
Natural oak, handmade brickwork, and clay roof tiles root the building in traditional craft, while modern glazing and insulation ensure energy efficiency and comfort. The use of natural and durable materials means the home will age gracefully, echoing the character of its rural setting.

Outcome
The project demonstrates how a modest garage can be reimagined into a characterful, light-filled retirement home. Blending traditional oak craftsmanship with modern living standards, the result is a residence that is both practical and inspiring — a home for the next chapter of life.

We’re absolutely delighted with our new home. What was once just a garage has been transformed into a beautiful oak-framed house that feels full of character and light. The layout is perfect for us — practical, comfortable, and designed with retirement in mind.
