Project Overview
Egbury Road is a new single-storey home positioned within the heart of a conservation area. The brief called for a contemporary residence that could sit quietly within its rural setting, while opening generously to its garden and wider landscape.
The scheme is composed of two pavilion-like wings connected by a glazed link, creating a series of sheltered courtyards and garden rooms. This arrangement allows the building to sit low in the landscape, breaking down its overall mass into legible, modest forms that respond to the grain of the village and the scale of nearby structures.
Design Approach
The architectural language draws inspiration from traditional rural buildings, reinterpreted in a refined and contemporary way.
Low, pitched roofs in dark metal reduce the perceived height and echo the silhouette of local barns.
Natural flint and timber cladding root the building in its Hampshire context.
Large areas of glazing are carefully balanced with solid walls, ensuring daylight and garden views while retaining a sense of privacy and enclosure.
The two volumes are arranged to create shifting perspectives across the site, with framed views out to planting, meadow, and woodland beyond.
Spatial Layout
The eastern wing contains the primary living, kitchen and dining areas, with full-height glazing opening onto the garden and terraces. The western wing houses private bedrooms and ancillary spaces, arranged around courtyards to bring natural light deep into the plan.
The central glazed link doubles as a welcoming entrance and circulation space, visually connecting the two wings while framing views of the landscaped garden.
Heritage & Context
Working closely with the local planning authority, the design was developed with a strong sensitivity to conservation priorities. The low profile, simple rooflines, and restrained palette ensure the house integrates comfortably with its surroundings. The broken-down massing avoids monolithic form, while landscaped edges soften transitions between the built and natural environment.
Materials & Sustainability
Flintwork walls with areas of timber cladding
Dark standing seam metal roof
Slimline high-performance glazing with deep reveals
Ground source heat pump and underfloor heating
Green roofs on secondary elements to enhance biodiversity
Native planting and water-wise landscaping
Outcome
Egbury Road demonstrates how contemporary architecture can co-exist with historic village fabric. By combining local materials with clean, modern detailing, the design achieves a home that is contextually rooted yet unmistakably of its time — a discreet modern house in the landscape.
We designed this home for ourselves, for our soon to be self-build home. The vision is minimal, warm, family orientated and understated. It blends with the landscape with a low invasive apporach. We are excited to transform this design into our family home for the future.
