Project Overview
This project transformed a traditional agricultural barn into a striking modern home, combining the warmth of its historic structure with bold contemporary interventions. The client’s vision was to create a residence that celebrated the volume and character of the original barn while providing light-filled, comfortable spaces for modern living.

Design Approach
The conversion retained the barn’s traditional form and brickwork, while introducing a dramatic double-height glazed gable to flood the interior with natural light and frame views of the surrounding landscape. Minimalist glazing along the length of the building complements the rustic fabric, striking a balance between old and new.

Spatial Layout
Inside, the design maximises the barn’s generous proportions. An open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space sits at the heart of the home, with soaring ceilings creating a sense of volume and drama. More intimate spaces, including bedrooms and private lounges, are arranged within the retained barn structure, ensuring both grandeur and comfort.

Sustainability & Materials
The project carefully reused existing brickwork and roof timbers wherever possible, maintaining the character of the original building. New interventions, such as high-performance glazing and modern insulation, ensure the home performs to contemporary environmental standards without compromising its rustic charm.

Outcome
The completed project is a seamless marriage of heritage and modernity. By retaining the barn’s robust character while introducing light, openness, and contemporary detailing, the design delivers a home that is both rooted in history and tailored to modern life.

We couldn’t be happier with how the barn has been transformed. The glazed gable floods the whole living space with light and gives us incredible views across the landscape, while the original character of the building has been beautifully preserved. Inside, the layout works perfectly for us — it feels open and modern yet still warm and homely. It’s the perfect balance of old and new, and truly feels like our forever home.
