Project Overview
Located in Thatcham, near Newbury, Mill Lane is a striking five-bedroom oak-framed residence, conceived as a self-build project on a generous detached plot. The brief envisioned a timeless yet contemporary family home — one that celebrates craftsmanship and natural materials while offering spacious, light-filled interiors suited to modern living.
Design Approach
The design draws inspiration from traditional English rural architecture, reinterpreted through a modern lens. The exposed oak frame forms the heart of the structure, giving both visual warmth and structural honesty. Complemented by pale brickwork and expansive glazing, the architecture achieves a refined balance between classic form and contemporary detailing. A steeply pitched roof and dormer windows pay homage to local vernacular forms, while full-height gables flood the interiors with daylight.
Spatial Layout
The home is thoughtfully organised to create a seamless connection between communal and private spaces. The double-height entrance hall anchors the layout, leading into generous open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. Large glazed façades frame views of the landscaped garden and surrounding countryside, inviting natural light deep into the home. Upstairs, five bedrooms — including a master suite with vaulted ceilings — offer calm, intimate retreats with expansive outlooks. A detached garage and landscaped driveway complete the composition, enhancing both practicality and sense of arrival.
Sustainability & Materials
Sustainability was central to the build philosophy. The oak frame, sourced from sustainable forests, not only ensures durability but also establishes a tangible connection to nature. High-performance insulation, triple glazing, and energy-efficient heating systems contribute to a comfortable, low-energy home. Locally produced materials — from the handmade brick to the natural slate roof — ground the design in its regional context while reducing environmental impact.
Outcome
The result is a distinctive, characterful family home that harmonises traditional craftsmanship with modern living. Mill Lane stands as a testament to the possibilities of self-build architecture — a bespoke, enduring residence that embodies warmth, quality, and a deep respect for its rural surroundings.
We wanted a contemporary home that still felt warm and rooted in the countryside, and the team delivered exactly that. The oak frame, natural light, and attention to detail have made this house everything we dreamed of — it truly feels like home.
