Project Overview

Oakwood is a bespoke oak-framed orangery designed for a private client, set within the grounds of an existing countryside property. Conceived as a detached garden retreat, the building provides a light-filled, versatile space that complements the main house while establishing its own distinctive architectural identity.

Design Approach

The design celebrates traditional oak craftsmanship expressed through clean, contemporary detailing. A fully exposed green oak frame defines the structure, its natural warmth and grain brought to life by generous expanses of glazing. The steeply pitched roof and gabled façade lend a timeless, barn-like quality, while the extensive use of glass blurs the boundary between interior and landscape — creating a strong visual and spatial connection to the garden.

Spatial Layout

Internally, the open-plan layout offers flexibility for dining, entertaining, or quiet relaxation. Full-height glazing along the main elevation floods the space with natural light and frames views of the surrounding grounds, while the extended roof canopy provides shaded outdoor seating areas. Natural materials and minimal detailing allow the oak frame to take centre stage, celebrating craftsmanship and simplicity.

Sustainability & Materials

Sustainably sourced oak forms the primary structure, complemented by locally handmade brickwork and clay roof tiles that root the design in its rural setting. High-performance glazing enhances energy efficiency while maintaining comfort throughout the year, ensuring the orangery remains both beautiful and practical.

Outcome

The result is an elegant, timeless addition that balances tradition and modernity. Oakwood offers a serene, light-filled retreat — a space that feels both connected to nature and perfectly at home within its countryside context.

We wanted a space that felt connected to the garden and could be enjoyed all year round, and the finished orangery has exceeded our expectations. The oak frame is stunning, the light is incredible, and the craftsmanship throughout is exceptional. It’s become our favourite place to spend time.
