Project Overview
This project focused on the careful renovation and extension of a Grade II listed farmhouse, breathing new life into a historic building while ensuring it could meet the demands of modern living. The clients sought a seamless integration of old and new — retaining the character and heritage value of the property, while introducing contemporary spaces that enhance comfort and usability.
Design Approach
Respecting the farmhouse’s listed status was central to the design strategy. The extension was conceived to be subtle and sympathetic, using traditional materials and craftsmanship to blend harmoniously with the original building. Internally, the renovation sought to preserve and celebrate historic features while reconfiguring the spaces to create better flow and functionality for family life.
Spatial Layout
The internal layout was reimagined to balance open, light-filled living spaces with more intimate rooms, ensuring the home feels both practical and characterful. The extension provides additional living space without detracting from the farmhouse’s historic charm, carefully integrated so that old and new feel part of one cohesive whole.
Sustainability & Materials
The use of locally sourced stone, handmade brick, and timber ensured that the extension matched the texture and tone of the existing farmhouse. Discreet modern interventions, such as improved insulation and energy-efficient glazing, were introduced to enhance the building’s performance while preserving its historic fabric.
Outcome
The result is a seamlessly integrated renovation and extension that respects the heritage of the Grade II listed farmhouse while making it fit for contemporary living. By balancing conservation with innovation, the project delivers a home that is both timeless and future-ready.
Preserving the integrity of a listed building while making it suitable for modern living is always a challenge, but this project has been a resounding success. The extension feels completely seamless — you would never know it wasn’t part of the original farmhouse — and the internal renovations have brought the property up to a standard that ensures its longevity. The balance between conservation and contemporary design has been handled with real sensitivity, and the result is a home that will serve generations to come.
