Quarry Lane

Project Overview
This project involved the design and delivery of a contemporary rear extension to a traditional London townhouse. The aim was to create a light-filled, open-plan living and kitchen space that maximised the connection between the home and garden, while introducing a striking modern contrast to the original brickwork.

Design Approach
The extension is defined by a minimal steel-framed structure with full-height glazing, creating a seamless dialogue between indoors and outdoors. The crisp, modern form sits in deliberate contrast to the existing Victorian brickwork, emphasising the old and new. Sliding glass panels open the entire rear facade, enabling the ground floor to extend effortlessly into the garden.

Spatial Layout
Internally, the design centres around a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Clean white finishes and concealed lighting enhance the sense of space and brightness, while warm timber joinery introduces texture and depth. The layout supports both everyday family life and entertaining, with fluid transitions between zones.

Sustainability & Materials
The use of high-performance glazing ensures excellent thermal performance despite the large expanses of glass, while the minimalist steel framing provides both strength and elegance. Natural materials, including timber accents, balance the sharp contemporary detailing with warmth and tactility.

Outcome
The completed project delivers a bold, contemporary extension that transforms the ground floor of the home. By maximising daylight, opening up to the garden, and contrasting sharply with the existing house, it creates a versatile and inspiring living environment tailored to modern family life.
