The Old Barn
This design proposal focuses on the creation of a two-storey side extension to a curtilage listed thatched barn. The brief was to provide additional living space that respected the historic fabric of the barn while introducing a contemporary architectural language that would feel both complementary and distinct.
Project Overview
This design proposal focuses on the creation of a two-storey side extension to a curtilage listed thatched barn. The brief was to provide additional living space that respected the historic fabric of the barn while introducing a contemporary architectural language that would feel both complementary and distinct.
Design Approach
The extension is designed as a lightweight oak-framed gable, echoing the barn’s roofline but expressed with a modern glazing strategy. A large glazed gable end opens the new interior spaces to the surrounding garden, maximising natural light and creating a visual dialogue between inside and out. The use of natural stone and timber cladding ties the new structure back to the material character of the original barn.
Spatial Layout
The lower ground floor accommodates a larger master-bedroom suite with walk-in-wardrobes, dressing room and en-suite. Upstairs, an open plan living and dining layout, enjoying views out over the landscaped garden. The extension connects directly into the barn, ensuring a seamless flow between old and new.
Sustainability & Materials
Natural and durable materials have been chosen to complement the historic barn, with oak framing, stone, and brick ensuring longevity and authenticity. High-performance glazing and discreet modern construction methods enhance thermal performance while keeping the architectural expression sympathetic.
Outcome
Once built, the project will deliver a sensitive yet striking extension that respects the barn’s listed status while expanding its functionality for contemporary living. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design, it demonstrates how heritage buildings can evolve without compromising their character.
We’re thrilled with the design for our extension. It manages to respect the character of the thatched barn while giving us the modern, light-filled spaces we were hoping for. The glazed gable in particular is a beautiful feature, and we love how the materials tie in so naturally with the existing building. It feels like the perfect balance between old and new, and we’re really excited to see it built.
